The Second Flat Fire was discovered on the afternoon of July 24, 2026, after a storm with hundreds of lightning strikes hit northern Harney County on July 22. Initial attack resources from the Burns Interagency Fire Zone and Egypt Fire responded but could not contain the fast-moving wildfire, which spread over twelve miles in seven hours.
Southern Area Team 2 is managing the fire along with the Stubble, Crater, Bald Mountain, and Jackass Butte fires. Priorities include public and firefighter safety, private lands, and critical infrastructure. Firefighters are using ground resources and aircraft to protect at-risk values.
