Sacaton Fire Grows on Gila National Forest

🔊 Listen · narrated by Aiden

The Sacaton Fire, a lightning-caused wildfire on Gila National Forest in New Mexico, has grown to approximately 4 acres as of July 9, 2026.

The fire, initially detected on June 21 near Sacaton Mountain at 10,658 feet elevation, is burning in brush, timber, logs, and snags within the Gila Wilderness. Firefighters report extreme risks due to the rugged terrain, with slopes of 40-60 percent and no available safety zones or escape routes.

The fire's location presents significant challenges for firefighting operations, including unacceptably long emergency extraction times (6+ hours) and hazardous high-elevation flying conditions during hot weather.
