The Porcupine Fire, discovered July 24, has grown to 3. 5 acres as of August 30. Firefighters constructed handlines around most of the fire but could not anchor at the base due to cliff terrain.
Due to steep terrain, limited escape routes, and lack of safety zones, direct firefighting efforts were deemed unsafe. The fire is now confined to limit threats to a communication site, recreation infrastructure, and nearby communities.
Firefighting personnel are using Porcupine Lake Trail #642 for access, with Lake Pend Oreille and Porcupine Lake serving as dip sites for aircraft. Residents should remain aware of changing conditions and exercise caution near firefighting operations.
