The Northern Rockies Type 3 Team 9 assumed command of the Upper Smith Fire as of 6 p.m. on August 6, 2026.
The fire, ignited by lightning on July 7, is located within the Smith Creek drainage, approximately 6 miles west of Porthill, Idaho, and about 20 miles northwest of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. It is burning on steep, north-facing slopes in heavy timber with significant dead and down fuels.
The fire remains under a full suppression strategy with direct and indirect tactics to protect critical values at risk.
